    About the mouse test

    Updated

The mouse test highlights each button as you press it, including the middle and side buttons, counts total clicks, flags double clicks and tracks scroll wheel movement and pointer position. It's most useful for catching a worn switch that registers one click as two, a wheel that jumps the wrong way, or a side button that has stopped working.

    How to use it

    1. Click each mouse button once and check that the matching button lights up.
    2. Single-click the left button slowly several times. If it registers as a double click, the switch is chattering.
    3. Roll the scroll wheel up and down slowly and watch for skipped or reversed steps.
    4. Press the back and forward side buttons if your mouse has them.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I test for double-click problems?

Click slowly and deliberately. If the test counts a double click when you only clicked once, the switch is worn and bouncing.

Why does the back button take me to the previous page?

Some browsers act on side buttons before the page can stop them. If that happens, the button is working.

    Does this work with trackpads?

Yes for clicks and scrolling. For multi-finger gestures, use the touch test.
