About the sound test
Updated
The sound test generates audio directly in your browser, so nothing is streamed or downloaded. You can play sine, square, triangle and sawtooth tones at fixed frequencies from 50 Hz to 8 kHz, run a frequency sweep, pan between the left and right channels, and watch a live waveform of what is playing.
How to use it
- Set your system volume low before you start.
- Play a tone and pan it fully left, then fully right, to confirm each speaker plays on the correct side.
- Step through the low and high frequencies to hear where your speakers start and stop producing sound.
- Listen for rattles, buzzing or distortion as you raise the volume.
Frequently asked questions
How do I test left and right speakers?
Use the balance control to send the tone to one channel at a time. If you hear the left tone from the right speaker, the channels are swapped.
Why can't I hear the 50 Hz tone?
Small laptop and phone speakers usually can't reproduce deep bass. Headphones or a speaker system with a subwoofer will play it.
Is it safe for my speakers and ears?
Start quietly. Pure tones at high volume can be uncomfortable and can damage small speakers, so raise the volume gradually.
