    About the typing test

    Updated

The typing test shows a passage of common English words, picked at random in your browser, and times you for 15, 30 or 60 seconds from your first keystroke. Net WPM counts only the characters that are correct, divided by five and by the minutes elapsed. Raw WPM counts every character you typed, and accuracy is the share of keystrokes that matched the passage. Mistakes stay marked in red, and Backspace lets you fix the current word or step back into a previous word that has an error.

    How to use it

    1. Choose a test length.
    2. Click or tap the passage and start typing. The timer starts on your first keystroke.
    3. Press Space after each word. Use Backspace to fix mistakes.
    4. When time runs out, read your net WPM, accuracy and errors. Press Esc or Restart to go again.

    Frequently asked questions

    How is WPM calculated?

A word is counted as five characters, including the space after it. Net WPM is your correct characters divided by five, divided by the test length in minutes. Raw WPM uses every character you typed, right or wrong.

What is a good typing speed?

Around 40 WPM is a typical speed for everyday typing. 60 WPM or more is fast, and above 90 WPM is very fast.

Does fixing a mistake improve my accuracy?

No. Accuracy counts every keystroke as it was made, so a mistake still counts after you correct it. Fixing it does bring your net WPM back up, because the corrected characters are now right.
