    About the keyboard test

    Updated

The keyboard test listens for every key event your browser receives and marks each key on a full key map as you press it. It counts presses, shows the last key, and tracks how many keys are held at once, which tells you whether your keyboard supports key rollover or drops keys when several are pressed together.

    How to use it

    1. Click anywhere on the page so it has keyboard focus.
    2. Press every key once and watch it light up on the key map.
    3. Hold several keys together (for example W, A, Shift and Space) and check the Held now count.
    4. Any key that never lights up is dead or not reaching the computer.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a key is broken?

Press it and watch the key map. If the key never lights up, the switch or its connection is faulty. If it lights up without being pressed, the key is stuck or chattering.

    What is keyboard ghosting?

Ghosting is when pressing several keys at once makes a key fail to register or an extra key appear. Hold a combination you use in games and check that every key in it shows as held.

Why doesn't the Fn key or a media key light up?

Fn is handled inside the keyboard itself and never reaches the browser. Some system shortcuts, such as the Windows key or Cmd+Tab, are captured by the operating system before the page sees them.

Does this work with laptop and wireless keyboards?

Yes. Any keyboard your computer recognises works, whether it is built in, USB or Bluetooth.
