About the keyboard ghosting test
Updated
Ghosting, or key blocking, is when a keyboard drops a key because too many are pressed together. Cheaper keyboards share wiring between keys and often handle only two or three keys at once in certain combinations, while gaming keyboards advertise 6-key or n-key rollover (NKRO). This test lights up every key that's held and counts them, so you can try the exact combinations you play with, such as W, A, Shift and Space, and see whether any key is lost.
How to use it
- Click anywhere on the page so it receives your key presses.
- Hold W, A, Shift and Space together and check all four light up.
- Add more keys one at a time and watch the Held now count.
- When a key you press doesn't light up, you've found a blocked combination.
Frequently asked questions
How many keys should my keyboard register at once?
Most keyboards handle at least 2 or 3 in any combination. Gaming keyboards usually manage 6 or more, and n-key rollover models register every key you press.
Why do some combinations work and others don't?
Keys are wired in a grid, and whether a combination ghosts depends on which rows and columns the keys share. Test the combinations you actually use rather than random keys.
Why does the count stop at 6 with an NKRO keyboard?
Some keyboards fall back to 6-key rollover over USB unless NKRO is switched on in their software or with a key combination. Check your keyboard's manual.
