    About the screen test

    Updated

The screen test shows full-screen solid colours, gradients, grids, checkerboards and a motion blur pattern. Each one exposes a different problem: solid colours reveal dead and stuck pixels, black reveals backlight bleed, gradients reveal colour banding, and grids reveal geometry and sharpness issues. It also lists what your browser reports about the display, such as resolution, pixel ratio and colour depth.

    How to use it

    1. Clean the screen so dust isn't mistaken for a pixel fault.
    2. Open each solid colour in full screen and scan the whole panel slowly.
    3. Use the black fill in a dark room to check for backlight bleed at the edges.
    4. Open the gradient and patterns to look for banding or uneven areas.

    Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a dead and a stuck pixel?

A dead pixel stays black on every colour. A stuck pixel stays one colour, usually red, green or blue, and shows up clearly against the other fills.

How do I check for backlight bleed?

Turn the brightness up, dim the room and open the black fill. Light leaking from the edges or corners is backlight bleed.

Can this test fix dead pixels?

No. It finds them. A truly dead pixel can't be repaired by software; check whether your monitor is still under warranty.
