About the webcam test
Updated
The webcam test opens a live preview from any camera your browser can see and measures its actual resolution, aspect ratio and frame rate rather than the numbers on the box. It also estimates how bright and noisy your scene looks, which tells you whether your lighting is good enough for video calls. The feed stays on your device.
How to use it
- Allow camera access when your browser asks.
- Pick the camera you want to test if you have more than one.
- Check the preview for focus, colour and framing.
- Read the resolution and frame rate, and use the low-light reading to improve your lighting.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my camera not detected?
Another app such as Zoom or Teams may be using it, the browser may be blocked from it in your system privacy settings, or a laptop privacy shutter may be closed.
Why is the frame rate lower than advertised?
Many webcams drop their frame rate in dim light to collect more light per frame. Add light in front of you and the frame rate usually recovers.
Is my video recorded?
No. The preview is shown only on your screen and is never recorded or uploaded.
