    About the double click test

    Updated

A mouse that double clicks on its own has a worn or dirty switch: the contacts bounce when you press, so one click reaches the computer as two. It closes windows you meant to select and drops items you meant to drag. The double click test flags every double click your browser receives, so slow, deliberate single clicks that still show as a double click confirm the fault. It also lights up each button and counts clicks, so you can check the rest of the mouse at the same time.

    How to use it

    1. Click the left button slowly, about once a second, for twenty or thirty clicks.
    2. Watch the Double click reading. It should never show Detected while you single-click.
    3. Repeat with the right button.
    4. Do a real double click to confirm the test picks it up.

    Frequently asked questions

Why does my mouse double click when I click once?

The switch under the button is worn, dirty or oxidised, so its contacts bounce and send two clicks. It's common on mice a few years old and on some popular gaming models.

Can I fix a mouse that double clicks?

Sometimes. Try compressed air around the button, and check your mouse software for a debounce setting. If it persists, the switch needs replacing, or the mouse does. Our double click guide covers each fix.

Could it be a Windows setting?

Rarely. If the double-click speed is set very slow, two separate clicks can count as a double click. Test with clicks a full second apart: a double click then means the switch, not the setting.
