About the midi keyboard test
Updated
The MIDI keyboard test uses the Web MIDI API to read messages from every MIDI input connected to your computer. Notes light up on an 88-key piano with their velocity, and the page shows the sustain pedal, mod wheel, pitch bend and any other control-change values, counts the notes you play and keeps a log of the latest messages with their channel. Devices appear and disappear as you plug them in or out.
How to use it
- Plug in your MIDI keyboard or controller and switch it on.
- Press Connect MIDI and allow MIDI access when the browser asks.
- Play every key softly and then hard, and check each one lights up with a matching velocity.
- Press the sustain pedal and move the wheels, knobs and faders to see their values change.
Frequently asked questions
Which browsers support this test?
Chrome, Edge and Opera on desktop and Android support Web MIDI, and Firefox does after a site-permission prompt. Safari and all iOS browsers do not.
Why does my keyboard not appear?
Check the cable and that the keyboard is in USB MIDI mode. Some devices need a driver, and some are only detected if they are on before the browser starts.
How do I find a dead key or a bad velocity sensor?
Play each key and watch the piano. A key that never lights up is not sending notes, and a key whose velocity is always very low or always 127 has a faulty sensor.
